Description
This class is designed to teach the technology and skills necessary to take successful images as well as present opportunities for students to explore and communicate ideas through photography as an art medium.

Outcomes
First semester: Understanding the mechanical controls and functions of the digital SLR camera, use of digital editing tools, image storage, and lighting techniques. Students will also begin developing their own photographic vision, as related to using the camera as a compositional and a conceptual tool.
Second semester: Further development and mastery of photographic technique and creative vision and preparing work for exhibition.

Required Materials & Class Fee
Cameras, lenses, tripods, and other related equipment will be provided for students to use. There is a $30 class fee that covers the cost of materials and printing. However, students will be responsible for providing an SD memory card for use in class if they choose to use the dslr cameras the school provides.

Photography Projects
40% of the final grade will be based on these projects. Students will be given 1 photography project per week which may or may not require more than one image to be turned in.

Writing, Tests, & Quizzes
60% of the final grade will be based on written assignments, including Photo Study assignments and self evaluations. A written exam will be given at the end of each semester and a term paper will be assigned in the second semester.

Attendance
It is the student’s responsibility to meet with me or email me to discuss any work missed during their absence and make up that work within a designated timeframe.

Evaluation
Evaluations will be based on technical, aesthetic, and creative merit. For both the projects and written projects, it is important that you follow the parameters given. Participation will factor in critiques, as well as in your overall evaluation (final grade).

Photo Equipment
All students and their parents must sign the contract for the use of AHS Photo Equipment before using any equipment. Copies of this will be provided at the beginning of the semester.
Please carefully read the following rules concerning the Alvin High School photography equipment checkout policy. By signing the contract, you are agreeing to the following conditions:
*The replacement cost of equipment lost, stolen, or damaged is as follows:

- Student are responsible for turning work in on time- If needed, turn work in prior to the due date. Students will have 1 week to turn in unexcused late work and each day the project is overdue will result in the lowering of the grade.
- Students must maintain a good work ethic- Computers are for class use only. Frivolous internet usage (game playing, shopping, etc.) is not allowed.
- Students must respect the lab and its facilities. No food or drink is permitted in the lab.
- Students must conduct themselves in a way that shows respect for the facilities, the teacher, and other students.
- Student will avoid any behavior that may disrupt other students' learning:
- Electronic devices will be turned off or on silent mode and will not be used in the classroom without Ms. Chauvin’s permission
- Talking with other students is allowed, except during critiques, lecture, or demonstrations
- Be polite when expressing opinions and listening to others; be kind
- Watch that foul language!
