Portfolio (Exam) Submission
You can get basic information about the AP Art portfolio submission here, or keep reading below.
The AP Studio Art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP Studio Art is not based on a written examination; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year (typically early May).
Beginning in 2019-20, the AP Art and Design portfolios will each consist of two sections. With the elimination of the Range of Approaches (Breadth) section of the current portfolios, students can focus on in-depth, inquiry-based art and design making; on skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas; on articulating information about their work, and develop their 2D design skills.

Keep in Mind
Process Documentation & Written Evidence
- Your portfolio may include work that you have done over a single year or longer, in class or on your own.
- If you submit work that makes use of photographs, published images, and/or other artists' works, you must show substantial and significant development beyond duplication. This may be demonstrated through manipulation of the formal qualities, design, and/or concept of the original work. It is unethical, constitutes plagiarism, and often violates copyright law to simply copy an image (even in another medium) that was made by someone else.
- Your portfolio will be evaluated by a minimum of three and a maximum of seven artist-educators. Both of the sections are reviewed independently based on criteria for that section, and each carries equal weight.
- You must follow the detailed specifications listed in the current Course Description . If the guidelines are not followed, your grade report will carry a message saying that your grade is based on an incomplete or otherwise irregular portfolio.
- Your understanding and mastery of 2D design skills and use of the elements and principles of design must be apparent in your submitted works.
Process Documentation & Written Evidence
- It's very important to document your process while you're working on your art, either through written journal entries, images of the work in progress (showing modifications), sketchbook drafts, or a combination. See images below as examples of what constitutes a process documentation.
- You will be required to write a statement about your work- Written Evidence. This statement will be 1200 characters, including spaces, and will need to discuss the following things:
- the central question your Sustained Investigation is based on
- how your Sustained Investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision
- Your Selected Works will also require written evidence and should include:
- Ideas present
- Materials
- Process
